Engineering Technologist II Full Time

The Engineering Technologist II provides technical and engineering services for various ship repair and build support projects at Victoria Shipyards. This role liaises between the technical office and other shipyard departments, ensuring effective communication and resolution of vessel and fabrication shop floor issues.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria.

What you’ll do

• Technical Package Development: Review customer information and participate in developing technical packages, including conceptual designs, 3D models, P&ID diagrams, and mechanical repair plans.
• Project Leadership: Provide technical support on assigned projects, supporting Operations, Production, Estimating, Supply Chain, HSE, and QA departments.
• Problem-solving: Resolve technical production issues in fabrication shops and onboard vessels.
• Design and Analysis: Perform technical and engineering calculations in multiple fields.
• Documentation: Prepare technical documents, including design and production drawings, supporting calculations, and reports.
• Collaboration: Work closely with a multi-disciplinary engineering team, review ship repair and conversion strategies and participate in developing technical proposals.
• Provide technical support on assigned projects.
• Perform engineering calculations within fields of knowledge (e.g., statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials & fluids, weight control, intact stability, and electrical systems).
• Contribute to technical investigations into component or system failures.
• Participate in developing engineered design solutions and repair strategies.
• Prepare repair specifications, work instructions, and inspection plans.
• Create design and shop drawings for manufacturing and repair purposes.
• Participate in all phases of refit projects, including requirements decomposition, design preparations, support analysis, material selection and specification, technical and engineering execution, and close-out activities.
• Participate in developing rigging arrangements and lifting plans.
• Collect and process technical information for ship repair projects.
• Collaborate with other departments to resolve production issues.
• Perform inspections as part of the collection process, assist during job execution, and contribute to the quality of the engineering work.
• Assist other departments by preparing technical information packages (e.g., Refit Layouts, P&IDs, Material Cut-Lists, Nesting Sheets, and BOMs).
• Participate in lessons learned throughout project execution and at close-out.

What you’ll bring

• Diploma of Technology or Bachelor’s degree in a shipyard-related engineering discipline, such as structural, mechanical, industrial, electrical, marine systems, or naval architecture.
• AScT, PTech, EIT, or P.Eng. designation in a Canadian province is an asset.
• At least two (2) years of experience in a marine or relevant engineering design office, shipyard, ship operations, or ship maintenance facility.
• Experience with 2D CAD drafting and 3D modelling software.
• Familiarity with Classification Society rules, such as ABS, LR, and DNV, is an asset.
• Experience in an operation or production support role is an asset.
• Experience with a diversely integrated project team is an asset.
• Relevant technical knowledge and design skills for the role, including fundamental engineering principles and knowledge of industrial codes, provincial regulations, and international, state, and classification society rules.
• Ability to perform design from rules, codes, and first principles.
• Ability to work with limited supervision and solve technical problems.
• Good at building relationships and conveying information.
• Able to write and present technical information clearly.
• Familiar with an engineering/production environment.
• Commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
• Commitment to operational efficiency and process improvement.
• Basic knowledge of ship repair, steel or pipe fabrication, and welding.
• Strong analytical skills and proficiency in MS Office (i.e., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Rhino, SolidWorks, and CADMATIC).
• Knowledge of FEA on structural and mechanical applications is an asset.
• Ability to move frequently between office, fabrication shop, graving dock, and onboard vessels.
• Good organizational skills and ability to adapt to a dynamic environment.
• Sound judgment in resolving issues and making decisions.

The estimated salary for this position is $87,000 – $104,400. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
