Vancouver Shipyards, based in North Vancouver, has been very busy working on some exciting projects. We continue to make progress on two 174m long Joint Support Ships (JSS) for the Royal Canadian Navy – the largest ships ever built in Canada! We are working towards delivery of an Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV) for the Canadian Coast Guard, and will be starting construction later this year of the first heavy Polar Icebreaker built in Canada for over 50 years.
Following that we have several Multi-Purpose Vessels that are currently designing for construction in years to come. These projects bring long-term job stability on some of the most exciting and significant shipbuilding opportunities in the world.

The pipe trades have a significant role in the shipbuilding industry. Duties/Accountabilities
Ability to comprehend isometric and P&ID drawings
Understand a variety of pipe systems and their function
Demonstrate a high level of accuracy in cutting, measuring and layout
Must be able to provide square and accurate cuts with a grinder
Experience in all types of rigging
Comfortable working in restricted and confined spaces
Able to climb ladders and work at heights
Ability to work together with a welder to produce quality fit up of pipe joints
Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and applicable welding procedures
Required Skills & Qualifications
Good communication skills both written and verbal in the English language
Demonstrated passion for safety and environmental stewardship
Ability to work positively in a team environment
Demonstrated proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings
Must be able to work in a construction environment involving confined spaces, working at heights, physical labour, and various weather conditions
This is a Union role with the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters – Local 170, which offer excellent health, welfare & pension packages after the completion of 480 hours. The Red Seal Journeyperson will earn $54.29 p/hr. Overtime is double time. As well, bargaining with the union is under way.
